(Unfortunately, Mosley hasn’t fought since, but he still remains No. 1.)

What about Mayweather?

• Indeed, Mayweather left as the lineal champion undefeated—and there was never a lineal champion after his departure.

• His return was marked with a dominant performance against Juan Manuel Marquez. His return can reasonably rank him No. 3.

• No. 1 vs. No. 3 can fill the vacant void.

• So, we would have a No. 1 vs. No. 3 that could be considered a legit lineal vacant fight.

The Case Against It
• Mayweather hasn’t defeated a real elite welterweight since his departure—and ranking him No. 3 is an exaggeration.

• Mosley vs. Manny Pacquiao should be the real lineal fight

• Pacquiao is the No. 1 welterweight by some boxing pundits, who have Mosley right behind—especially after outclassing Joshua Clottey.

• Others believe Mayweather vs. Pacquiao should be the real lineal fight because Mayweather was the last lineal champion and Pacquiao is the undisputed pound-for-pound champion.

What do you think?

Fighters at the cusp of being All-Time Greats

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 140px; height: 105px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_KbY8PxUCWfw/S6FqU--RE2I/AAAAAAAAACM/4B7oGF32nDU/s200/gloves+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449753932829102946" />

This week, FFF is starting a new series on fighters at the cusp of of being all time greats. These fighters without a doubt were elite, hall of fame fighters. However, they were shy of being all time greats.

This week we take a look at Oscar De La Hoya, Felix Trinidad, and Joe Calzaghe.

Oscar de la Hoya
Notable wins against hall of fame opponents: Pernell Whitaker, Hector Camacho, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Notable losses against hall of fame opponents: Felix Trinidad, Shane Mosley, Bernard Hopkins, Floyd Mayweather, and Manny Pacquiao

Notable accomplishments: Champion in five weight divisions.

Analysis: Oscar De La Hoya is an all time great in PPV sales, but fails to be an all time great. He never defeated an elite hall of fame opponent. Do Fernando Vargas and Ricardo Mayorga really count? Indeed he defeated legends such as Whitaker, Camacho, and Chavez. However, they were past their prime fighters. Don't get me wrong, those fighters were stepping stones for De La Hoya, he just failed to follow up after those victories. He did face the best but lost to the best, his popularity and box office power covered the fact that he never won the big one and lost to the best fighters of his generation

Verdict: Shy of being an all time great

Felix Trinidad

Notable Wins against hall of fame opponents: Hector Camacho, Pernell Whitaker, Oscar de la Hoya,

Notable Losses against hall of famers: Bernard Hokins, Ronald Wright, Roy Jones Jr.

Notable accomplishments: Champion in three weight divisions

Analysis: Trinidad achieved three championships in three different weight divisions. He defeated fading legends such as Whitaker and Camacho, then followed up by beating an elite, in his prime fighter; De La Hoya. However, his first defeat led him to retirement and he never successfully came back.

Verdict: (Close but not enough) Needed more HOF wins

Joe Calzaghe

Notable Wins against hall of fame opponents: Bernard Hopkins, Roy Jones Jr.

Notable losses against HOF: None

Like I mentioned, records can be deceiving. You can argue Calzaghe defeated a lot of bums throughout his career, including Eubanks, who was good but past his prime. He defeated Lacy and Kessler, but are far from being elite fighters. He did manage to beat Hopkins and Roy Jones Junior but they were both past their primes. Unfortunately, he took way too long to establish his name and never defeated an elite in his prime fighter. As a result, Calzaghe was a very good fighter, with incredible speed, with hall of fame credentials. However, unfortunate events such as a lack of competition and late match ups leave him shy of being an all time great.

Verdict: Waited too long to make a name for himself and his record is very deceiving.

Boxing Madness!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KbY8PxUCWfw/S5qiI7LxeMI/AAAAAAAAACE/0kqf59xoVP8/s200/manny-pacquiao-11.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5447844973467760834" />
Devon Alexander's knockout victory over Juan Urango officially kicked off an exciting month for boxing.

Without further to due, lets look at the following fights and FFF's predictions on how each fight will play out.

Pacquiao vs. Clottey

I’m envisioning a late knockout in favor of Pacquiao.

Don’t get me wrong, Clottey is very though and has never been knocked out.

However, he has never faced someone like Pacquiao and will be too much for him.

Klitschko vs. Chambers

I will take a gamble here and predict that Chambers will upset Klitschko.

Am I crazy? Perhaps!

And guess what, I am basing it on one sole factor; speed. Like every boxing guru says out there, speed kills!

Chambers, is much faster that Klitschko, who is known for his shaky chin.

Chambers by unanimous decision.

Abraham vs. Dirrell

Here is another upset in the making.

Call me crazy again but, like Chambers, Dirrell is much faster than the methodical Abraham.

I figure Abraham will let Dirrell cruise the first six rounds thinking he can break him down in the late rounds. However, Dirrell has fresh legs that will outlast Abraham in the late rounds along with his good boxing skills.

Haye vs. Ruiz

I can’t believe Ruiz is getting another shot at a championship. Anyways, Haye will cruise to a UD but I would be really impressed if he knocked him out.

So do you agree or disagree?

A Dissapoiting Aftermath: Cotto vs. Margarito

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_KbY8PxUCWfw/S5APPX7mRbI/AAAAAAAAAB8/9So71UeEMXs/s200/cottoMargaritoArt.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5444868706287371698" />
Miguel Cotto was left a bloody mess following his loss to Antonio Margarito and immediately hospitalized. Margarito on the other side was thrilled with his long-desired career defining fight and said “El tornado llego para quedarse.” (The Tornado was here to stay.)

I sat back and was thrilled; we had just witnessed one of the best fights in recent years. Both champions showed why they were considered the best, fighting with heart and tenacity.

Furthermore, I was already looking forward to an epic rematch and I figured both Margarito and Cotto would continue to be future stars of boxing.

Man was I on cloud nine.

It seemed both fighters left everything in the ring and beat the prime out of each other. Margarito, despite being the winner, had a severe swollen face and Cotto was, like I mentioned, immediately taken to the hospital.

Unfortunately, the aftermath of that fight was quite disappointing.

Margarito fought Shane Mosley down the road and lost. Not only did the hype of a Cotto/Margarito rematch wane down, but Margarito was caught with a plaster like substance.

Perhaps, indicating that he might have used that same substance on Cotto. Yet, we will never be 100 percent sure.

Margarito hasn’t fought since, doesn’t have anyone really clamoring for his return, and has forever tarnished his legacy.

Cotto on the other hand went on to win a dubious decision against Joshua Clottey, faced current P4P king Manny Pacquiao, and lost by TKO.

Cotto plans to move up in weight and challenge Yuri Foreman. Nevertheless, he has repeated that he plans to retire soon.

I find it disappointing that such fighters who were deemed to have very promising years down the road seem to have their best years behind them.

This is boxing, a cruel sport inside and outside the ring.

Defining the Great White Hope

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 135px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_KbY8PxUCWfw/S4b_GBb1qlI/AAAAAAAAAB0/88EMcmocUKo/s200/3817980964_f1e5ed9c3d.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442317678653319762" />
On December 26, 1908, Jack Johnson defeated Tommy Burns and became the first African-American heavyweight champion, or how it was called back then, the first colored champion.

Alas, the notion of the “Great White Hope was born.”

Indeed people were clamoring for the defeat of the newly black champion. They claimed for a great white hope to eliminate this newfound threat.

And the rest became history.

It isn’t an easy task to define "The Great White Hope." In fact, I don’t think there is an exact definition.

Currently, there are a lot of great white fighters like Waldimir Klitschko, Vitali Klitschko, Ricky Hatton, Lucian Bute, and Carl Froch, among others.

So why is the notion of “The Great White Hope” still lingering among the boxing community?

Furthermore, I haven’t seen any of the fighters I mentioned above tied to the notion of a great white hope.

However, there is one fighter that has been referred as “The Great White Hope”: Kelly Pavlik.

Now, I’m certain that Pavlik doesn’t remotely care whether he's a great white hope. However, there have been various articles published labeling him as "The Great White Hope."

Nevertheless, his nationality (American) makes him stand out and be considered a great white hope.

I honestly don’t know any white American fighters that are champions and serious contenders except for Kelly Pavlik. So perhaps is that the meaning of the great white hope?

Additionally, the idea of the Great White Hope originated in America, where James J. Jeffries became the first boxer to take the mantle of “The Great White Hope.”

Not too long ago, Gerry Cooney was labeled “The Great White Hope”, although he never embraced it and distanced himself from being labeled as such. Isn't Rocky suppose to be an unofficial "Great White Hope"?

So is “The Great White Hope” a white American fighter? More than likely.

Is it something else? Perhaps.

Is the great white hope a dead notion only used to fuel race issues? Definitely: Sex and racism sell.

What do you guys think?

A Look At: The Junior Welterweight Division Episode 1

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 103px; height: 130px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_KbY8PxUCWfw/S4QgDsQ__wI/AAAAAAAAABs/tDcKFQg8Jjk/s200/bradley.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441509497564561154" />
The Jr. Welterweight Division is currently a division packed with future stars and a division that could soon take over as the best division, if it hasn’t already.

Despite Manny Pacquiao being the lineal lightweight champion, he has made it clear he will not drop down in weight, so he shouldn’t be a factor.

So let’s take a look at its major players and what we should look for them in the upcoming boxing schedule.

Timothy Bradley

This could be Bradley’s breakout year if he manages his career wisely.

He is slowly creeping into the pound-for-pound rankings and has earned his place as the top Jr. welterweight of the world. He has solid wins against veterans such as Junior Witter, Kendall Holt, and Nate Campbell.

I thoroughly believe he is the best, and only an elite boxer can take away his precious 0 from his record.

Up next: He has nothing scheduled but his team has said that they would love a fight against Edwin Valero, an exciting match with boxing next superstar implications.

Amir Kahn

Kahn was able to turn around his career by moving up in weight and winning a Jr. Welterweight title.

I keep hearing he is going to face either Marcos Rene Maidana or Juan Manuel Marquez. Either fight is good in my book and should be a good one.

Kahn, like Bradley, possesses everything to have a breakout year and become an elite fighter, as many predicted he would.

Of course questions still linger about his chin but let’s hope he can prove his critics wrong.

Marcos Rene Maidana

Maidana got the attention of fight fans by making Victor Ortiz quit. Maidana could continue the hot streak he is in if he can land another major fight and knock out his opponent.

Just for fun, wouldn’t it be awesome if Maidana fought against Edwin Valero?

Devon Alexander

Alexander also entered into the Jr. Welterweight rankings by thoroughly beating Junior Witter and making him quit in his stool.

He has a fight scheduled against Juan Urango which is a solid but limited opponent that could be a good add onto his resume.

Other notable fighters that could impact the division:

Ricky Hatton

Paulie Malignaggi

Juan Urango

Victor Ortiz

Some fights that I would love to see:

Maidan vs. Hatton

Bradley vs. Kahn

Alexander vs. Victor Ortiz

Diaz vs. Malignaggi III…aw just kidding hope you enjoyed the read!

Mayweather is beating Pacquiao for the Moment

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt;
I’ll cut straight to the point.

With this fight, Mayweather has outsmarted Manny Pacquiao in many ways.

Think about it.

Mayweather is taking the higher risk by fighting the crafty veteran Sugar Shane Mosley.

More importantly, Mosley did not hesitate to take the random blood test Pacquiao was reluctant to take.

I am not implying by any means that Pacquiao is taking performance enhancement drugs; it is just that Mosley had no problems so many people will question why Pacquiao didn’t accept like Mosley did.

It will certainly be interesting to see how fight fans (forever) will argue this issue back and forth. Plus, I’m sure the Mayweather’s will make this a huge deal.

Furthermore, Mayweather will silence many critics or haters that have accused him of ducking the most dangerous fighters out there.

Whether you want to argue Mosley is past his prime, won against an overrated Margarito or simply isn’t on Mayweather’s league is irrelevant.

Mosley is one of the top three welterweights, if not the number one welterweight. So Mayweather is taking a huge gamble in fighting someone like Mosley.

Now let’s talk about the benjamins, mula, dinero, whatever you like to name it.

Who do you think will win the PPV battle?

Will it be Pacquiao vs. Clottey or Mayweather vs. Mosley?

Pacquiao has the live gate crowd advantage because Cowboy’s Stadium can hold a huge number of fans.

So Pacquiao can argue and boast the huge numbers he is undoubtedly going to draw; myself included.

Nevertheless, I find Mayweather vs. Mosley more intriguing, more exciting, with overall more implications.

I will also predict that it will beat Pacquiao vs. Clottey PPV sales.

Why?

Mayweather and Mosley are both superstars that will draw crowds from both fighters.

Pacquiao on the other hand will draw fans because of his popularity. Clottey is a well known fighter among hardcore boxing fans. Plus he doesn't have a huge following and isn't well known outside of hardcore boxing fans.

Like I said before in my previous article (Mayweather vs. Pacquiao has exceeded the hype Part 2) there will be many twists and turns as both fights take place.

Now nothing against Clottey or Mosley but if either one manages to upset either Pacquiao or Mayweather well….you know where I am getting to.

Boxing Review 2010 January

Notable Fights:
(WBA World Featherweight Title 126 lbs)
1-23/2010
Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Roger Mtagwa (Gamboa TKO 2)
Importance: 7/10
Fight Rating: 8/10

-Gamboa makes second defense of his WBA World Title

(WBO Featherweight Title 126 lbs)
1-23/2010
Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Steven Luevano
Importance: 9/10
Fight Rating:7/10

-Juan Manuel Lopez is now a champion in two weight divisions (122 lbs & 126lbs)

(IBF Light Flyweight Title (108 lbs)
1-23/2010
Brian Viloria vs. Carlos Tamara
Importance: 9/10

-Tamara marks this years first major upset and wins his first world title
-Viloria was hospitalized after the fight.

Biggest Disappointment: Andrew Berto vs. Shane Mosley gets cancelled

Biggest Disappointment II: Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather gets cancelled

Upset of the Month: Carlos Tamara TKO's Brian Viloria

Fight of the Month: Gamboa TKO's Matagwa

Month Rating 7/10: This month featured some solid fights featuring great knockouts and an upset.

Similarly, Antonio Margarito was the unofficial number one welterweight after his upset of Miguel Cotto.

More importantly, Margarito was the leading Mexican boxer following his fight with Cotto.

Heck, some were even comparing him to Julio Cesar Chavez.

Although he is nothing like Chavez, Margarito had demonstrated the iron chin, come forward style, balls on the line fighting that had built the stereotype of Mexican fighters.

As a result, he was supposed to follow up 2009 by beating Shane Mosley and moving on to bigger things.

What happened?

Margarito was knocked out and caught tampering with his gloves.

Even hot prospect Alfredo Angulo fell victim and suffered his first loss against
Kermit Cintron.

Even the lighter weight divisions felt the impact.

Edgar Sosa and Ulisses Solis also fell victims and both lost their titles.

Fernando Montiel recently didn’t look too good in his last fight either.

What about Rafael Marquez and Israel Vasquez?

Both were tremendous top ten fighters before their third encounter.

Unfortunately, their trilogy was so great that it may have taken their prime from them and lowering their elite boxing status.

Despite these setbacks, Mexican still has and will have a bright future.

Juan Manuel Marquez is currently the “Numero Uno” Mexican boxer in my opinion.

Recently he got a golden opportunity to face off with Floyd Mayweather.

However, weight and skills proved too much for Marquez to handle and lost a lopsided decision.

Nevertheless, one must keep in mind Mayweather still remains undefeated and had a weight advantage over Marquez. Also, one must also keep in mind Marquez recent achievements that merit him as one of boxing’s elite.

He lost a disputed decision to Pacquiao, moved up in weight and was the first to knock out Joel Casamayor.

He then defended his title against Juan Diaz in a fight of the year candidate.

Despite his age, Marquez may have a brighter future waiting for him in a packed lightweight and Jr.Welterweight divisions. Plus, drinking his own pee might make him younger.

Saul Alvarez is by many to be the future of Mexican Boxing and recently signed with Golden Promotions.

Abner Mares is also another star waiting to make a big impact in the sport.

Angulo is still exciting and has time to polish his skills and may become a champion.

So not everything is grim for Mexican boxing. At the moment it may not have a star that can completely look forward to embody their hopes, dreams, and patriotism. It has bumped into an unexpected void but that will soon be filled because its history and tradition.

Although this article may seem a bit critical, Mexican boxing is still bright and shows a bright future.

Mayweather vs. Pacquiao Has Exceeded the Hype Part 2

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 162px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_KbY8PxUCWfw/S1fkAr1ssWI/AAAAAAAAABU/O4eD38sa4Bs/s200/floydmayweatherjr2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5429058576237506914" />
Indeed the fight is “dead” but come on you know the fight will be made either this year or the next.

So how exactly does it continue to exceed the hype?

Just imagine how the fight has taken a complete 360 degree turn.

The fight is officially cancelled and Pacquiao has decided to seek another opponent.

As most of you know that opponent is none other than Joshua Clottey.

The fight is scheduled to take place on March 13, 2010 as planned but with one exception.

The location will be the newly billion dollar Cowboy’s Stadium located in Arlington, Texas.

I guess Jerry Jones found a way to host his big match huh?

Furthermore, no one really expected this sudden change.I personally though the fight would be cancelled but didn’t think Pacquiao would immediately find an opponent; and choose someone like dangerous Joshua Clottey.

Let’s not forget about Mayweather.

Mayweather flirted with the idea of also fighting on the same date as Pacquiao.

Nevertheless, he stated that he would refrain from fighting on such date and seeks other plans.

Recently, the Berto and Mosley fight was called off leaving Shane Mosley available.

So more than likely Mosley will get his wish and get his fight with Mayweather.

So how should we take in all these changes?

First, Mayweather will quite critics who claim he ducks some of the best fighters.

Mosley in my opinion more dangerous than Joshua Clottey and is a welterweight elite.

Pacquiao on the other side is by many expected to blow of Clottey.

More than likely he will probably beat Clottey but simply blow him off? We will see….

So Pacquiao and Mayweather have taken their fight to a new level and plan to start Round 1 by deciding how will make the most sales.

As a result, either Mayweather or Pacquiao will gain more leverage when they start their re-negotiations for their fight.

So fight fans don’t fret, the fight will be made but both sides are just hyping things up even more.

Oh and expect many other twist and turns throughout the year.

Why Boxing Will Not Die Part 1

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 160px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KbY8PxUCWfw/S0ejrKb3yvI/AAAAAAAAABM/PjBggLKKyaA/s200/IMG00853.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5424484238122011378" />
“If boxing was a stock, I would sell it as fast as possible”
-Bert Sugar

Perhaps boxing is not present in the mainstream media the way it used to be. In fact, it might never revert back to its golden age. However, that does not imply that it will simply disappear. Too many factors fuel the sport of boxing that simply won’t let it die.

Before I start my analysis of why boxing will not fade away, I want to analyze the many factors that have changed the complexity of boxing that lead many to believe it is slowly drifting away.

New Faces in Boxing

Boxing is now a global sport.

Although some may not embrace it, one must realize that no ethnicity or set of fighters dominate the entire sport.

Some say this hurts the sport.

Heck, it’s the ongoing corruption within judges and sanctioning bodies that hurt our sport.

Should I remind everyone about recent fights such as Kermit Cintron vs. Sergio Martinez and Juan Diaz vs. Paul Malignaggi I?

Or the ridiculous paper champions out there?

The surge of MMA

One can’t help compare both sports. They are both violent by nature, but are different nonetheless. Both have different sets of audiences, appeal, rules, history, etc.

Furthermore, MMA is experiencing a rapid rise, especially with the young demographic.

As a result, many have signaled this as the knockout blow that will put the sport of boxing to sleep.

In my opinion, neither sport poses a real threat against each other. Much of it is overblown by the media anyways.

Also, how real is the threat of MMA?

Boxing's biggest fight (Mayweather vs. Pacquiao) will at this point beat any MMA (UFC fight) in PPV sales.

MMA fans may not agree because MMA is on the rise and may reach a point where it will compete with boxing purses.

Nevertheless, it is not there yet.

Most importantly, boxing should worry about its internal problems instead of focusing its attention on MMA.

The Heavyweight Division

When we take a look back at boxing history we usually think of the Heavyweight heroes such as Joe Louis, and bigger than life figures like Muhammad Ali.

Thus, some say we need a heavyweight savior like Louis or Ali to put boxing back into mainstream attention.

I beg to differ.

Indeed, boxing's Heavyweight division may not be getting any major headlines.

But I tend to repeat this many times: boxing is in a historic time where the little guys will be valued just the same as the big guys.

Overall, one must see the changing complexity of our beloved sport in a positive way and one that will bring boxing into a new historical stage where 50 years from now people will look back at boxing and remember the little guys like Pacquiao and Mayweather.

Part 2 will be coming soon where I will discuss the exact reasons why boxing will not die.

Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao Has Already Exceeded the Hype

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 203px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KbY8PxUCWfw/S0P2hns53QI/AAAAAAAAAAU/hMjA7EPRz74/s320/mayweatherMOS010907_468x737.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5423449433737649410" />
Neither fighter has thrown a punch, and there hasn’t been any blood spilled.

Moreover, the fight is still not a guarantee.

But ironically, the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight has already exceeded the hype.

To begin with, negotiations for this fight have been wild and problem-filled from the beginning.

The first dilemma was who would take the bigger share of the purse.

Both fighters claimed they deserved the bigger share of the purse. However, that was settled and both agreed to an even split.

Fair deal.

With the money settled, location was now the bigger problem.

Las Vegas, New Orleans and Dallas were in a three-way race to see who would get the honors to host the biggest fight of the decade.

Bob Arum and Richard Schaefer were expected to meet with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to begin negotiations and bids for this fight. Schaefer, at the last minute, refused to meet with Jones and, on behalf of Mayweather, decided a stadium was not appropriate.

Jerry Jones was undaunted by this and made an alleged bid that sparked interest in both Mayweather and Pacquiao camps to take a look at Dallas.

Nevertheless, Las Vegas turned out to be the final winner.

On top of all this, Mayweather Sr. and Freddie Roach commenced in a verbal war.

Mayweather Sr. has his doubts about Pacquiao’s achievements and claims Pacquiao must be on performance enhancement drugs. Roach responded by saying “he would knock Mayweather Sr. out” (Seriously).

This will surely be a highlight on HBO’s 24/7 series.

Head trainers throwing jabs at each other and a possible $50 million dollar purse for each fighter.

I know. It’s overwhelming.

Despite the bumpy road, the fight was deemed to be reality. Fight fans dreams would become true.

There was just one, major obstacle in the way.

Recently, Mayweather demanded an “Olympic Style” drug testing. Apparently, Pacquiao would have no part of this, prompting Bob Arum to declare the fight “dead”.

Now the boxing community has gone crazy over this debacle.

Some are saying Pacquiao should man up and take the test if he has nothing to hide.

Some say he has no reason to do so and is part of a psychological warfare Mayweather is trying to instill.

Is there racism behind all this?

Is Pacquiao hiding something?

Is Mayweather trying to make an excuse to avoid Pacquiao?

What exactly is going on is beyond me, but it has led to highly debated arguments fueled by articles and comments written all over the boxing community.

Just take a look at the columns featured here in Bleacher Report.

Personally, I believe the fight will occur. It may or may not happen on March 13, 2010, but it will be made some time next year.

In regard to the whole testing and performance drug testing, I have yet to fully analyze all the factors to make an educated opinion, so I will refrain from that to avoid any controversy or hateful comments.

Talks about meeting other opponents are just tactics used by both sides to get negotiating leverage. So you can tell Shane Mosley, Yuri Foreman and Paulie Malignaggi not to get their hopes up.

As you can see, negotiations and drama are going back and forth.

Even if the fight is lackluster (which it won’t), the pre-negotiations leading up to the fight have been so wild that the fight has already exceeded the hype.

Remember we still have press conferences, interviews, predictions, and HBO’s 24/7 to keep it going.

Without a doubt, this fight is already becoming an epic battle.

A Look at Boxing in 2010: Analysis and Predictions

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 108px; height: 145px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_KbY8PxUCWfw/S0P2zBugYCI/AAAAAAAAAAc/R6lbV81Vwn0/s320/gloves.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5423449732781465634" />
2009 was a great year for boxing. Manny Pacquiao made history by becoming a champion in seven weight divisions. Floyd Mayweather vs. Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto made back-to-back million sale pay-per-view fights. Showtime made an unprecedented tournament featuring some of the best Super Middleweights of the world. All this and more went down in 2009.

2010 will be an even bigger year for boxing. Therefore, let’s take a quick look at some matches already scheduled for the upcoming year.

Shane Mosley vs. Andre Berto

Next year will kick off with a great match-up between Shane Mosley and Andre Berto. It is the classic young undefeated fighter against the savvy veteran. This bout has early fight of the year candidate written all over it.

Let’s hope it lives up to the hype.

Prediction: Will we see the birth of a new star or the continuing dominance of the future hall of famer?

I’m following my heart on this one (not always wise) and picking Berto to start the boxing year with a huge upset. Wouldn’t it be ironic if Mosley were to lose though? I mean he fought roughly a year ago against an opponent many didn’t give him a chance against. Even more ironic is if Berto won.

Why?

Well he would be in the similar position Mosley was in 2009. You never know.

The World Boxing Tournament

The first fight of Group Stage One will take place on March 6, 2010. This bout will feature Arthur Abraham vs. Andre Dirrell.

Abraham is riding in with three points, while Dirrell is trying to get his first points. Dirrell proved in his fight with Carl Froch that he has great boxing skills but his lack of experience cost him dearly. Abraham is the complete opposite of Dirrell by coming in with a demolition of Jermain Taylor and the leading favorite to win this tournament.

Prediction: Abraham will start off slow as always and let Dirrell gain some points and confidence. Dirrell will also frustrate Abraham at certain points in the fight. With that said, Abraham will loosen himself up and roll into a unanimous decision or late knockout. However, Dirrell is a very live underdog in this fight.

In April, we will get the final two matches of Group Stage Two. Carl Froch will square off against Mikkel Kessler and Andre Ward against Jermain Taylor.

Both matches are very interesting to analyze.

Kessler is coming off a loss, while Froch is riding with a win against Dirrell. Although Kessler is the overall better boxer, how much will the loss against Ward affect Kessler? For that reason Froch has a very good chance at upsetting Kessler.

On the other side, Ward was the biggest surprise by beating one of the tourneys favorite to win; Kessler. Jermain on the other hand was brutally knocked out by Arthur Abraham. Many expected, myself included, that he would drop from the tournament. Taylor is a fighter and refuses to go down; it may be a bad idea.

However, Ward is not a huge puncher like Abraham, which may favor Taylor.

Predictions: Unless Kessler is still suffering from his defeat at the hands of Ward, look for Kessler to outbox Froch whose style is made for him.

Taylor will give Ward a more competitive fight than Kessler. However, it will not be enough and Ward should either knock him out late or win a decision by wide margins.

Israel Vasquez vs. Rafael Marquez IV

I love their trilogy and I consider it one of the best in modern boxing history. However, I am not that excited to see them go at it again.

Not because it won’t be a good fight, but because of their health.

Vasquez required nearly a year to recover from an eye injury and did not look too good in his returning bout. Marquez on the other hand easily defeated his opponent but left lingering questions about what he has left in the tank.

As a result, they have dropped from many P4P lists due to their inactivity.

But you can’t blame them for seeking a fourth fight; fighting each other is the best payday for both of them.

Prediction: It will be an even match like all their other fights. However, Marquez looks like the fresher fighter and should beat Vasquez in a split decision.

Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao

For now I am going to refrain from any analysis or predictions. I know it sounds lame but I want to dedicate a whole article to this fight. I mean that is the least it deserves since it will be the biggest fight of the decade!

Feel free to leave a comment if you disagree with any prediction.

Though It's Close To Christmas, Boxing Is Still Exciting

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 221px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KbY8PxUCWfw/S0P27rc5vHI/AAAAAAAAAAk/X29FGVi568E/s320/ChristmasPresent.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5423449881420872818" />
Usually by the time Christmas is around the corner, the boxing enthusiasm wanes down and pugilists are getting ready for their presents and eggnog.

This year was an exception.

Let’s take a look back at past events that have been buzzing around the boxing community.

Kessler vs. Ward

I figured Pacquiao’s destruction of Cotto would steal thunder from the last fight of the World Classic Tournament, however, its results shook things up in the tournament.

The last match of Group Stage one featured Mikkel Kessler vs. Andre Ward. Kessler was not only the favorite to beat Ward, but the favorite to win the tournament as well.

Furthermore, many expected a clean sweep from the European fighters. However, Andre Ward balked at the idea and opened up his present early by dominating and beating Kessler in a huge upset.

Not only did Ward establish himself as an elite fighter, but shook the tournament in the process.

Stage one featured a knockout, a controversy, and an upset.

Stage two can’t come soon enough.

Lucian Bute vs. Librado Andrade

The rematch between Librado Andrade and Lucian Bute was up next, coincidentally in the Super Middleweight division.

Let us now take a look at a small recap of their first match.

Bute thoroughly outboxed Andrade until he faded in the final seconds of the fight and was knocked down. What followed was boxing’s “modern long count.” Whether or not Bute was assisted by a long count was irrelevant because of his amazing victory in the rematch.

Many expected two scenarios in the rematch between Bute and Andrade. Either Bute would prepare himself better and have enough stamina to outbox Andrade for twelve rounds or Bute would wilt under Andrade’s pressure.

However, few expected the granite-chin Andrade to be knocked out by Bute. As a result, Bute not only erased the ghost of his first fight, but can arguably be one of the best super middleweights of the world.

Like I mentioned before, I figured Pacquiao vs. Cotto would steal some of the tournament’s spotlight. Yet, it was Bute’s dominating victory that stole some of the tournament’s spotlight.

Maybe Bute should replace Jermain Taylor?

Jones vs. Danny Green

Speaking of incredible knockouts, Danny Green did exactly that. He scored an improbable TKO against Roy Jones in round one.

Maybe it was time for Jones to let go, but I, unlike many, was looking forward to Hopkins vs. Jones II.

Paul Williams vs. Sergio Martinez

Two upsets and two unlikely knockouts, it can’t get any better than this right?

Wrong.

To increase the drama towards the end of the year, Paul Williams and Sergio Martinez faced off and created a fight of the year candidate in the process.

Round one opened up with Williams knocking down Martinez, who amazingly rallied back and knocked down “The Punisher.”

Is anyone thinking round of the year?

What followed was toe-to-toe action, blood, and more punishing blows. In the end, Williams was given the decision. However, the fight could have gone either way and their matched proved why they are some of the most avoided fighters in the world.

Both earned themselves into Santa’s good list, except for that one judge who scored it 119-110 in favor of Williams. I know for a fact he’s going on the bad list!

More to Come: Early presents are coming this year through great matchups featuring Timothy Bradley vs. Lamont Peterson, Vitali Klitschko vs. Kevin Johnson, Victor Ortiz vs. Antonio Diaz, Vic Darchinyan vs. Thomas Rojas, Kelly Pavlik vs. Miguel Espino, and the rematch between Juan Diaz and Paulie Malignaggi .

I am still befuddled on why people say “boxing is dead.”

A Look at Boxing's Welterweight Division: Part Two

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 108px; height: 145px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KbY8PxUCWfw/S0P3a3SEciI/AAAAAAAAAAs/xaF1m0shKVc/s320/r.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5423450417172607522" />
My previous blog examined the major players in the welterweight division. Now I will take a look at the potential stars in the division and the “gate keepers” of the division.

Potential Stars

Andre Berto : I think Berto has the highest possibility of becoming a key star in this division. He is undefeated, carries power and speed that can give any fighter a run for his money. Some critics point to his chin and lack of experience, but time will soon tell if that will be any major factors in his development.

At the moment, he faces his biggest test in 2010 against Shane Mosley, which should be a great fight.

Possible Scenarios in 2010: Berto will kick off the year with a fight against Mosley. A win against Mosley sets him up for several options. He could follow up his victory with a fight against either Mayweather or Pacquiao. If he were to lose to Mosley, then he could attempt a rematch against Collazo to build his momentum right back up.

However, the way he loses or wins could also determine what he does next. Let’s assume he does the impossible and knockouts Mosley! Ironically, he may set himself in a position Mosley was in when he did the impossible and knocked out Antonio Margarito. Berto might look so good that fighters like Pacquiao or Mayweather may avoid a fight with him.

Unfortunately, sometimes in boxing those scenarios happen. What if Berto were to lose by knockout? It would be a devastating loss for Berto. Talks would begin about being exposed or a frail chin he seems to have. It’s funny how the media will set you up as the next big thing, then one loss turns you into fringe contender...boxing is a tough sport!

Joshua Clottey : It must be frustrating to be Clottey. He’s had unfortunate luck throughout his career. He was beating the then feared Antonio Margarito until he “allegedly” broke his hand which forced him to lose a decision to Margarito. He had another chance to make himself a star with a fight against Cotto.

Many believe he won, while others believe he cruised too much in the final rounds which gave the decision to Cotto. After the fight he immediately told Bob Arum that he couldn’t take it anymore and wanted to retire.

However he took it back and was scheduled to fight Mosley (it was cancelled). No problem; he was re-scheduled to face Carlos Quintana (that was also cancelled). Poor Clottey....

Possible Scenarios in 2010: Let’s say this is the year Clottey can redeem all his misfortunes and shortcomings. He might be able to land a fight with the winner of Mosley vs. Berto, assuming they are not able to get a match with either Pacquiao or Mayweather. He has the skills and potential to defeat either Mosley or Berto in a fight of the year candidate.

One must also take notice that this would be Clottey’s last chance to set himself up into a major player in the welterweight division. So a loss would probably send him down the rankings with less meaningful fights that just wouldn’t grab his attention. Overall, Clottey is a very interesting fighter to look for in 2010.

The Gatekeepers

Kermit Cintron : Kermit Cintron revived his career with an upset of Alfredo Angulo in the light middleweight division. As a result, Cintron may decide to continue campaigning at light middleweight instead of welterweight. However, tempting fights may bring him down to the welterweight division.

Possible Scenarios in 2010 : I don’t know why but I have a sneaky feeling Cintron might fight Cotto in Madison Square Garden. It would be a great opportunity for Cintron to ascend himself into a major star in the division but this fight is a dangerous fight for Cotto as his ring return.

He could also fight Berto, Clottey or Quintana but I think either of these foes would give him trouble and beat him as a result. Who knows Cintron might improve, but I see him staying as a gatekeeper and not doing much in 2010.

Zab Judah : Awe...the most dangerous five round boxer in the sport. Well that may be an overstatement but Judah seems to have a problem with his psyche and as a result has lost many of his big fights. Judah is a very well known fighter with strong skills and is somewhat odd to have him labeled as a gatekeeper.

However, he hasn’t done much lately and seems to be at the end of his career. Furthermore, he plans to go down in weight and try his luck there.

Possible Scenarios in 2010 : More than likely, I see Judah moving down in weight to see if he can establish himself at the light welterweight division. He still carries a notable name that could get him a meaningful match to turn his career over. Plus, there isn’t much at welterweight for him anymore so this would likely be his move in 2010.

Final Note : Stay tune for Part Three, where I will examine the wild cards in the welterweight division (Cotto and Margarito) and potential prospects that the boxing world will soon buzz about.

A Look at the Welterweight Division Part 1

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KbY8PxUCWfw/S0P3_XmEkeI/AAAAAAAAABE/LoqEYpIe4jw/s320/Cotto+vs.+Pacquiao-real+_7__0001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5423451044321726946" />

Boxing throughout its years was led by the Heavyweight division. From Jack Johnson to Mike Tyson, the Heavyweight division was the face of boxing.

Ironically, it’s the little guys who are now carrying the sport of boxing, with the Welterweight division being the new face of boxing.

Therefore, let’s take a look at the current welterweight division, its mainstream stars and possible scenarios in 2010.

The Mainstream Stars

Manny Pacquiao : Not only is he the face of the welterweight division, but he is the face of boxing (although Mayweather will surely argue that).

His recent historical victory against Miguel Cotto has established him as the man to beat in the welterweight division and sets himself up for another legendary matchup, this time against Floyd Mayweather.

What might he do in 2010: Can you believe Pacquiao may have his best year ahead of him if he manages to stage a fight with Mayweather?

That is a huge statement, taking into consideration that Pacquiao has won in seven weight divisions, beating opponents such as Barrera, Morales, Marquez, Oscar de la Hoya, Hatton and Miguel Cotto.

Why will 2010 then be his best year? 2010 can be the best year for him because a win against Mayweather will elevate him as the greatest boxer of this decade and serious consideration as a top-10 all-time great. That is pretty amazing, isn’t?

What if he loses to Mayweather? Well, a defeat would be terrible considering Pacquiao carries the dreams and hopes of his country. Yet, a loss to a fighter of Mayweather’s caliber would be nothing to be ashamed about and he could certainly look for a rematch.

If not, Pacquiao could go down to defend his lineal jr. welterweight title against the likes of Timothy Bradley, Amir Khan, or Devon Alexander (all intriguing matchups). He could also look to end his rivalry with Juan Manuel Marquez.

Other possible scenarios: Believe it or not, there is also the possibility that Pacquiao may go up to chase a world title in the light middleweight division, making it eight divisions Pacquiao would attempt to be champion in.

The most likely opponent seems to be Yuri Foreman. Will the Pac-Man finally lose to the scales or keep on making boxing history?

Floyd Mayweather : Success is the best way to define Mayweather. He thoroughly outclassed the lineal lightweight champion of the world, Juan Manuel Marquez, in vintage fashion and is in talks with a showdown with Pacquiao.

His ego will tell you that he is best pound-for-pound fighter and that he will thoroughly outbox Pacquiao...easier said than done.

What might he do in 2010: Mayweather has won in five weight divisions and defeated opposition such as Corrales, Castillo, Judah, Hatton, Oscar de la Hoya, and recently Marquez.

Impressive, but just like Pacquiao, his best year may be just around the corner.

Defeat Pacquiao and he will regain his p4p crown, will be an all-time great and the best fighter of this decade. It doesn’t get any better for him.

Lose to Pacquiao? I find it difficult to envision Mayweather losing since I’m accustomed to seeing him win all the time. However, a loss to Pacquiao might lure him into retirement. I know it sounds crazy, but I mean what more can Mayweather do?

At this point he is fighting for legacy and wouldn’t want to expose himself into high-risk low-reward fights. Although he may continue, but only if there is a huge payday involved.

Other scenarios: Well lets pretend Mayweather vs. Pacquiao is done some time after March and Mayweather decides to take a tune-up fight. More than likely he could fight the winner of Mosley vs. Berto, but by no means is either man a tune-up fighter and could pose a serious threat to Mayweather's perfect record.

Nevertheless, Mayweather vs. Berto or Mayweather vs. Mosley are both magnificent fights. But until then we can only ponder these possible scenarios.

Shane Mosley : Mosley had a career-defining win against Antonio Margarito. Although an underdog, Mosley fought like the favorite and knocked over the “biggest tower in boxing."

Unfortunately, Mosley never fought again in 2009 and is now set to fight against young and dangerous Andre Berto.

What might he do in 2010: It could be a make or break year for Mosley. He faces an inexperienced fighter in Andre Berto. He will undoubtedly be the favorite but many factors go against Mosley.

He is 38 and will go into the fight with a roughly 53-week layoff. Secondly, Berto possesses incredible speed, power and tenacity proven in his fight against Collazo. However, this may all be irrelevant if Mosley soundly defeats Berto.

So if Mosley gets past Berto, then he will hopefully attempt to get into the sweepstakes of fighting the winner of Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. Now let’s assume he gets that winner and wins.

Well then what a way for Mosley to turn his career and reassert himself as the p4p champ. Simply Incredible! On the other hand, he might be avoided by either Pacquiao or Mayweather and may possibly rematch Cotto in order to avenge his loss.

Final Note: Some scenarios mention above may or may not happen. Just a friendly reminder though, this is boxing and anything can happen. Plus it's fun just to think of all the possibilities. Also, stay tune for Part Two coming soon.

Boxing Arcade Zone

2-D KNOCKOUT
ROCKY LEGENDS

2-D Knockout

Get the Knock-Out widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox!
